Leather merchant, distributor, and wholesaler Β· Steeton, Keighley, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

J. Wood Leathers

Overview

Vegetable-tanned leather at J. Wood Leathers

J. Wood Leathers describes its principal business as a wholesale leather merchant supplying trades, businesses, and individuals, including one skin on a one-off basis. It stocks hides in its Steeton warehouse and sources leather from tanneries around the world, so the company should be presented as the merchant and seller rather than as the tannery that produced every article.[1][12]

The current online shop separates natural and dyed-through vegetable-tanned collections. At review, the natural collection displayed ten products and the dyed-through collection displayed ten, while current orderable examples included full-grain natural sides, premium shoulders, and whole butts with selectable cuts, sizes, or thicknesses and enabled basket actions.[2][3][4][5][15]

The natural range covers shoulders, sides, and whole butts across light through heavy thickness bands. The representative regular-side listing offers thickness-dependent half, full, and larger full-side choices; the premium-shoulder and whole-butt listings expose quantity-one basket ordering. Exact cut, size band, thickness, origin, grade, price, and stock remain product-specific and should be checked on the selected listing.[2][4][5]

Leather is generally priced from an average skin size, and the supplier says hides are sold as cuts such as a side, whole butt, whole hide, or shoulder. This is not a square-foot cut-to-order catalog: the smallest normal purchase is the listed unit or variant, even though one-skin individual access is explicit and no sitewide monetary minimum was found.[1][8][9]

Sample access has two distinct routes. The currently orderable paid vegetable-tanned swatch card contains three weights of natural side leather and six colors of dyed-through Amanda shoulder leather; the FAQ separately says buyers may request a limited number of specific cuttings free of charge. A sample or swatch is an evaluation format, not evidence that an arbitrary project-size panel can be cut from any stocked hide.[6][7]

Service details

Custom cutting exists, but only for bulk work.

J. Wood publishes custom cutting for straps and leather panels, including drawn-design work, splicing, and made-to-order binding in continuous rolls. The same page explicitly limits cutting and binding to bulk orders and says it does not cut single or individual bespoke pieces, so the service must not be presented as a maker-level one-off panel or strap service.[10]

Stocked formats remain separate from services. The shop sells some pre-existing panels and offcut bags, while the offcut listing describes random one- and three-kilogram mixed bags rather than made-to-spec cuts; warehouse offcut stock can range from small pieces to full sides but is variable and visits are appointment-based. Offcut bags are mixed across leather types and are non-returnable, so they are not a guaranteed vegetable-tanned sample pack.[11][15][16]

Order planning

Shipping and returns.

Direct United States ordering requires an emailed quotation

The official FAQ says J. Wood will send leather worldwide and asks international customers to email their full address, including ZIP code, for a tracked shipping quotation, usually using UPS or FedEx. International shipping is not currently completed through the online shop. This verifies a direct US ordering path from J. Wood itself, not fulfillment through an underlying tannery or a separate US distributor, but it does not establish a fixed rate, carrier, transit time, or coverage of every US edge destination.[6][9]

Import charges and final landed cost are order-specific

The delivery and terms pages state that worldwide shipping is available by quote and warn that an order delivered outside the UK may incur import tax payable by the customer. US buyers should confirm freight, dispatch timing, duties, taxes, brokerage, customs handling, and payment steps in the quotation before placing the order.[9][13]

For ordinary stock items, J. Wood accepts return requests within 14 calendar days of delivery, requires authorization, then gives the buyer 14 calendar days to send the item back. Leather must remain new and may not be cut, dyed, stitched, or used; buyers normally pay return shipping. Bespoke items are excluded, the separate offcut product is non-returnable, and product-specific stock-lot restrictions can be stricter, so eligibility should be checked before purchase or alteration.[11][13][14]

Decision guide

When this supplier may be worth comparing.

Potentially useful if you need

  • Comparing natural vegetable-tanned shoulders, half or full sides, and whole butts across a wide thickness range.
  • Shopping both natural and dyed-through vegetable-tanned leather from one UK warehouse-backed merchant.
  • Buying one listed skin or hide variant without a trade-only account.
  • Ordering a paid veg-tan swatch card or requesting a limited number of specific sample cuttings.
  • Arranging direct delivery to a US address through an emailed international quotation.
  • Using bulk strap, panel, or binding work when the job is large enough for the supplier's service.

Confirm before ordering

  • The selected article's tannage, cut, grade, thickness band, average size, country of origin, live variant availability, and current price.
  • Whether the smallest listed unit is a half side, full side, shoulder, butt, hide, stocked panel, swatch card, or another product-specific format.
  • Whether a requested free sample is available and whether the paid swatch card represents the exact article or color under consideration.
  • The final US shipping quotation, carrier, dispatch estimate, duties, taxes, brokerage, customs process, and payment method.
  • Whether the requested cutting or binding job meets the unpublished bulk threshold and how preparation affects timing and returns.
  • Return eligibility for bespoke, stock-lot, offcut, discounted, or otherwise restricted products before ordering.
