Leather distributor and exclusive U.S. Horween retail partner Β· Chicago, Illinois, United States

The Tannery Row

Overview

Vegetable-tanned leather at The Tannery Row

The Tannery Row's public catalog carries leather from Horween, Walpier, Virgilio, Atlantica, Tempesti, and other U.S. and European sources. The range covers leather goods, footwear, garments, furniture, interiors, and general leathercraft. The site says its hides are first quality and available with no minimums; the FAQ spells that out as a one-piece minimum order.[1][2][6]

The Tannery Row identifies itself as Horween Leather Company's exclusive U.S. retail partner and sells first-quality Horween sides. It also makes clear that the two companies are separate. An order through The Tannery Row is a distributor purchase; the FAQ points buyers who need thousands of square feet at a time directly to Horween.[1][3][6]

Horween is only part of the catalog. The current lineup also includes Italian vegetable-tanned double shoulders from Virgilio, including Margot, Smoked Matte, Vachetta, Vachetta Box, Vachetta Heavyweight, and Pierrot Lux. Virgilio makes those leathers; The Tannery Row handles the catalog, consultation, ordering, fulfillment, panels, swatches, and Chicago showroom.[2][4][5][6]

Stocked products can be ordered directly through the online cart. Formats include full hides and sides, double shoulders, horse fronts, shell cordovan, leather strips, panels, swatch books, scrap boxes, and surprise sides. Availability, color, weight, cut, size, and price depend on the listing, so check the live product page before buying.[2][3][4][5]

The FAQ separates online orders from manual orders handled by a consultant. Online prices are based on historical average hide sizes. Manual orders are priced by the square foot and invoiced after the leather is packed. In either case, the order goes through The Tannery Row rather than directly through the tannery that made the leather.[6]

Published volume breaks start at 100, 500, and 1,000 square feet, provided the order stays within one article, color, and weight. The Tannery Row says anyone can use those breaks without opening a wholesale account. Buyers ordering thousands of square feet may instead be referred to Horween for direct supply.[3][6]

For testing a leather before committing to a side, The Tannery Row lists Horween Dublin, Derby, and Chromexcel panels in 12-by-12-inch and 12-by-24-inch sizes and selected weights. Swatch books are also available for Horween, Virgilio, and other represented lines. Panel orders are capped at five matching pieces; beyond that, the listings point buyers to a full side. Swatch selection and stock vary by line.[8][9][10]

Service details

Selection help and showroom access belong to the distributor, not the tannery.

A Tannery Row consultant can talk through the project, compare leathers, and help narrow the choice. The service is especially relevant when a buyer is unsure what to use or needs 100 square feet or more. This is selection and ordering help from the distributor, not a promise that Horween, Virgilio, or another tannery will customize a retail hide to the buyer's specifications.[6]

At the Chicago showroom, 1515 W. Carroll Avenue, visitors can inspect stocked leather, choose a piece, pick up swatches, and buy leather and related goods in person. Check the current hours and consultant availability before making the trip; a published schedule can change.[6]

The official pages reviewed for this guide do not confirm splitting, skiving, straps cut to specification, or cut-to-size preparation for ordinary hide orders. The catalog does sell pre-cut panels and listed strips, but those products do not establish a general custom-cutting service.[3][5][6]

Order planning

Shipping and returns.

Published fulfillment and domestic transit guidance

The FAQ says online and manual leather orders are generally fulfilled within seven business days. It gives domestic transit estimates of three to five days by UPS Ground and five to ten days by U.S. Postal Service for online orders. Arazzo upholstery has a ten-business-day fulfillment guideline, while shell cordovan has a four-week guideline. The supplier presents all of these times as estimates, not guarantees.[6]

International orders are acknowledged, but coverage is not defined

International buyers may have to pay duties, taxes, customs fees, or other import charges, according to the FAQ. The site does not publish a definitive country list or promise service to every destination. Buyers outside the United States should confirm that their address is eligible and check the live shipping charge before ordering.[6]

Standard leather prices do not include free shipping, and carrier charges are based on item weight. A few products advertise free domestic USPS shipping on their own pages. Panels and several swatch products have their own domestic shipping terms, which should not be assumed to apply to full hides or the rest of the catalog.[6][8][9][10]

Under the general return policy, uncut leather can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of the invoice date. The buyer pays the original delivery fee and return freight unless the leather is defective or the order was incorrect. Product-specific final-sale terms still apply, including those on the panel listings reviewed here.[7][8][9][10]

Decision guide

When this supplier may be worth comparing.

Potentially useful if you need

  • Buying one piece of first-quality Horween leather without opening a wholesale account.
  • Comparing Horween bovine, equine, and bison articles with Italian vegetable-tanned double shoulders and other European leathers in one catalog.
  • Starting with panels, swatch books, strips, scraps, or a surprise side before committing to a larger hide.
  • Using a leather consultant for project selection, manual square-foot ordering, or qualifying single-article volume pricing.
  • Inspecting stocked leather and choosing a piece at the Chicago showroom.
  • Reviewing published domestic fulfillment guidance and a formal general return process before ordering.

Confirm before ordering

  • The exact tannery, article, tannage, hide cut, color, weight, dimensions, grade, price, and live availability for the selected listing.
  • Whether online average-size pricing or a manual price-per-square-foot order better fits the purchase.
  • Whether current quantity qualifies for a price break and remains within one article, color, and weight.
  • Whether a waitlisted article can be placed into the system for a future tannery production run and the expected timing.
  • Destination eligibility, duties, taxes, customs charges, carrier service, and the live freight quote for any international order.
  • Product-specific shipping and final-sale terms, especially for panels, swatches, scraps, sale items, and other exceptions.
  • Any requested preparation service, because general splitting, skiving, custom strap cutting, and cut-to-size work were not verified.
