Leather Suggestions

To make this style of wallet the type of leather doesnt matter quite as much as the thickness. Since you will have several layers (3 total) stacked at the thickest section, its crucial you dont start with leather that is too thick. We suggest 3oz to 4oz (1.2 – 1.6mm) as an “all-around” good weight. If you still feel it is too bulky you will need to skive the edges to get a more streamlined look.

As a rule of thumb, vegetable tanned leathers will laser cut cleaner and more consistently than chrome tanned (or oil tanned like we used in the video). 9 times out of 10 we use vegetable tanned leather for ALL of our laser cut leather projects.

Laser Cutting Tips

First and foremost make sure you’re using either a co2 laser or diode laser to cut out this wallet. A fiber laser or UV laser is NOT the right tool for this job. Ideally you should have at least 20w of power. If you are working with a laser that is under 20w, please make sure you have leather on the thinner side.

Leather is notorious for not wanting to lay flat so make sure to anchor the edges of your panel down by whatever means you can. Often times that means using little magnets. We highly recommend using a honeycomb panel to cut on instead of the slats. DO NOT cut your leather without something being underneath (honeycomb or slats). You need air flow underneath the leather while cutting.

After you finish cutting, don’t be afraid to use a gentle leather cleaner to wipe down the surface. Just make sure to apply a conditioner after its dry to bring back some of those oils and waxes. The leather may be dry and parched around cut edges. You would be too if you just got run under a laser beam.
