Leather Selection Suggestions
In this video we used 2 different leathers. The cover is whiskey Shinki Hikaku Shell Cordovan that is roughly 4oz. thick. The card slots are 3-4oz. Q-Tan Lite Bridle Leather sourced from Thoroughbred Leather. You can find more info about ordering from Thoroughbred Leather check out this post.
For this card holder I would suggest anywhere from 2oz to 5oz for the outer cover and anywhere from 2oz to 4oz for the card slots. If you had to choose an “all-around” weight that would work well for all pieces it would be 3/4 oz.
If you are not using a vegetable tanned leather to create this flap wallet your edge finishing guidelines will probably be different. Chrome-tanned leathers and extremely soft leathers like sheepskin are difficult and sometimes impossible to burnish by hand. If you would like to follow this tutorial to spec, we would suggest acquiring a burnish-able vegetable tanned leather.
